Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Tametaka with NBTHK Hozon Certificate

【Description】

This blade was forged by Hakushu Kurosaka Jyu Tamesaka(伯州黒坂住為隆), a Japanese swordsmith from the late Edo period(1764-1772). Hakushu Kurosaka is the name of the place in Tottori prefecture. He lived in this region when forging this blade.

He originally signed as Oshu Aizu Jyu Shimosaka Tametaka(奥州会津住下坂為隆). Oshu Aizu is located in Fukushima prefecture, and Shimosaka is the name of the school he belonged. Tametaka started his career in Oshu Aizu.

The founder of Shimosaka school was the first-gen, Yasutsugu. It was initially founded in Shimosaka town in Shiga prefecture at the end of the Muromachi period(Late 16th century). During the early Edo period, Yuki Hideyasu, the second son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, arranged the place in Kitanosho castle town in Echizen for Yasutsugu and his apprentices to move there to organize the school. Many swordsmiths who had belonged to Shimosaka school moved to other parts of Japan.

Oshu Aizu Shimosaka school was one of the branches and lasted a few generations. Tametaka once belonged to this school but moved to Tottori province. It was pretty common for Japanese swordsmiths to relocate themselves to look for better job opportunities.

It seems that the Hamon(tempering line) is Kyo Yaki style(京焼き). That means the Hamon starts with Suguha(Straight tempering line) and then changes it to Midareba(wavy tempering line).

This sword has a Hozon certificate issued by NBTHK. This authentication paper was only given to Japanese swords, worth preserving by Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai(the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword). The blade also comes with a beautiful set of Katana style Koshirae.

Hamon
The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang on purpose to prevent red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, which is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

【Other Details】

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

A family crest is designed for this Fuchi. This type of mark is called Gosan-no-Kiri (五三の桐) pattern. The Kiri (桐) pattern is composed of three standing straight inflorescences and three leaves. The number of flowers that are blooming at each inflorescence means the ranks of this design. It is also famous that one of the most popular Samurais in Japan: Toyotomi Hideyoshi used the Kiri pattern for his family crest. According to a theory, Hideyoshi used Omodaka (沢瀉, arrowhead) pattern as his family crest. However, Oda Nobunaga, a well-known military commander in the Warring States period, permitted Hideyoshi to use Kiri design. This plant pattern was once used by the imperial family and national leaders of the time. Today, this plant pattern is used as the crest of the Japanese Government.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

Due to its elongated body covered with scales, it might be the dragon that is the motif of this Menuki. It seems brass is applied to the surface. Initially, a dragon is an imaginary creature found in ancient traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is a symbolic beast of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, belly is Mizuchi (蛟, mythical animal in Japan which looks like a snake and have a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. Some people believed that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance. Still today, it maintains its meaning as the all-purpose auspicious pattern, and lots of people appreciate this design.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

It is an iron Tsuba that has Kozuka and Kougai holes. A bird and waves are engraved with the Sukashi-Bori (openwork) technique. As a circle-shaped pattern is carved on its head, this bird is probably a crane. The flying crane pattern is called “Tobi Tsuru Mon (飛鶴文)” in Japanese. As a proverb says, a crane lives a long life, even one thousand years; therefore, a crane has been considered as one of the symbols of longevity since a long time ago. Also, as cranes make compatible couples, its pattern represents happy marriage. Due to its pure white feathers and dignified appearance, it was favorably used as a good omen design for various ornaments or furnishings such as Kimono (着物, traditional Japanese costume) or Obi (帯, belt for Kimono).

About the wave pattern, as waves’ movements continue endlessly, this design represents eternity, immortality, longevity, and birth, etcetera. Also, since tides change the shape and terrain of rocks repeatedly, some people hoped for a strong will by using this motif. People used this pattern wishing for an indomitable spirit to rechallenge time and time without giving up. Due to its dynamic design, we would like to guess that many Samurai loved this pattern.

SayaSaya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.

Authentication PaperNBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade

NBTHK, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.
