Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Shimofusa no Kami Kuniyoshi with NTHK Kanteisho Certificate

【Description】

This blade was signed by Shimofusa no Kami Kuniyoshi (下総守国義), who was active during the Kanbun era (Early Edo Period: 1661-1673). He was born in Hyuga domain (Today’s Kagoshima/Miyazaki prefecture), and his birth name was Sakunojyo.

He moved to Osaka to become an apprentice of Izumo no Kami Kunisada (和泉守国貞), one of the most famous swordsmiths in Osaka during the early Edo period. Kuniyoshi learned refined sword-forging techniques from Kunisada. Kuniyoshi did a Daisaku for Kunisada during the Ka-Ei~Shoho era (1624-1648), which suggests that Kuniyoshi’s craftsmanship was highly regarded by his master. Daisaku is a regular act where an apprentice or a child of the swordsmith signed his master’s name with his master’s permission or forged a blade on behalf of the master. His son, the second-gen Kuniyoshi, became an apprentice of Inoue Shinkai, the son of Kunisada (his master).

It is said that he became an independent swordsmith during the second year of the Keian era (1649). And he received Shimofusa no Kami in the third year of Keian era (1650). Kami is an honorable official title given by the emperor for his excellent artistry. Then, he moved to Hamada domain in Ishimi province (Shimane prefecture today) to exclusively serve Kamei clan. At the end of his career, he went back to Hyuga domain.

*Please keep in mind that there are a few Kitae Kizu on this blade. If you like to check its condition thoroughly, please feel free to contact us.

Authentication PaperNTHK-NPO Kanteisho Certificate for the blade

They authenticated the blade on December 12nd, the 3rd year of Reiwa (2021). The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.

The Board of Education in Osaka prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(銃刀剣類登録証). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
