Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Kunitsugu with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate

【Description】

This blade was forged by Musashi no kami Kunitsugu(武蔵守國次) in the second year of Genroku era(1689: Early Edo period). Kunitsugu was the second son of the first-gen Kawachi no kami Kunisuke.

The first-gen Kunisuke was one of the most famous swordsmiths in the early Edo period. Kunisuke was an apprentice of Hosokawa Kunihiro in Yamashiro province(Kyoto) and moved to Osaka, making a popular sword-forging style called “Osaka SHINTO.”

It is said that Kunitsugu forged swords on behalf of his father, Kunisuke, proving his highly skilled artistry. There isn’t so much remaining work signed by Musashi no kami Kunitsugu for that reason. He has many siblings, and other brothers were also famous swordsmiths such as Higo no kami Kuniyasu, Ise no kami Kuniteru.

This blade is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon certificate issued by NBTHK. This authentication paper was only given to Japanese swords, especially worth preserving by Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai(the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword). It accompanies by gorgeous sword mountings. Its Tsuba, Fuchi Kashira and Menuki have Samurai theme and we believe they were all made by the same artist, most likely Mogarashi Nyudo Soten(藻柄子入道操典) while there are no signature. Red Saya(Scabbard)has been considered a noble design, which complements the beautiful sword fittings.

【 Blade】
Cutting Edge Length(Nagasa)69.5  cm(  27.3 inches)
Curvature(Sori)1.1 cm( 0.43 inches)

Hamon
The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process
Jimon(Jihada)
visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Sabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

Samurais who wear gorgeous armors are designed for this Fuchi Kashira. The contrast of gold and black colors gives a luxurious appearance for Fuchi Kashira itself and the handle of the sword.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

The man who brings his sword is seen. A scene of the battlefield is designed for the Tsuba and the Fuchi Kashira. This Menuki might have been chosen to use the consistent motif.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

Circle-shaped Tsuba made from iron. Its Mimi (耳, the edge of Tsuba) is covered with a gold color metal. Fighting Samurais are depicted. This Tsuba’s theme might have been quoted from a famous battle history during the Samurai period.

Saya Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.
