Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Kunitaka with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate

【Description】

This blade was forged by Settsu Jyu Fujiwara Kunitaka(摂津住藤原国隆) in the early Edo period. Settsu Jyu means living in Settsu province in Osaka prefecture. We believe he was living in Settsu province when he forged this blade. Japanese swordsmiths often signed his name with where he resided.

Kunitaka is known for forging swords on behalf of his master, the first-gen Izumi no Kami Kunisada.
Kunitaka didn’t sign so many swords because he dedicated his life to his master’s work most of the time. Kunisada is known as one of the most famous swordsmiths in Osaka in the early Edo period. Kunitaka is less well-known than his master, but his craft must have been so good that he could create blades on behalf of his master.

Kunitaka served Kawachi no Kami Kunisuke, another renowned swordsmith as an apprentice after his master Kunisada deceased.
He received the honorable title Harima no Kami in his career. He trained one of the most skilled swordsmiths named Inoue Shinkai.

He later moved to Bungo province(Oita prefecture) and served the Takada clan exclusively. We assume this blade was forged in the early Edo period(1661-1673: Kanbun era) based on historical facts.

This blade is appraised as Tokubetsu Hozon certificate issued by NBTHK. This authentication paper was only given to Japanese swords, especially worth preserving by Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai(the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword). It accompanies with gorgeous sword mountings.

Hamon
The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process
Jimon(Jihada)
visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Sabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

The Kara-Jishi (唐獅子) is designed for this Fuchi Kashira. They are taking a rest in the bamboo forest. The golden metal is applied to KaraJishi and bamboos so that these motifs have brilliant appearances. There is a famous theme called Take-Tora Mon (竹虎文) that contains the combination of tiger and bamboo. This Menuki’s motif might have been delivered from it.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

It is challenging to judge what the motif of this Menuki is. By seeing the gaps through the Tsukamaki thread, it seems a mass of leaves of some plant is carved semi-three-dimensionally. Since it does not have any decorative color decoration, you could enjoy the color of the metal material itself.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

Aori-shaped iron Tsuba that has Kozuka and Kougai holes. Same as the Fuchi Kashira, the Kara-Jishi is designed for this Tsuba. Shishi (獅子) means a lion in Japanese, and Kara-Jishi is a lion brought from China to Japan in the Toh period (唐, Tang dynasty, 618-907). The Kara-Jishi typically has curly hair for its head, neck, body, and the tale. In Buddhism, Kara-Jishi is regarded as a symbol of wisdom, and Monju Bosatu (文殊菩薩, Manjushri Bodhisattva) rides lions. According to a theory, Kara-Jishi originates from Komainu (狛犬, stone guardian dogs that exorcize evil spirits).

Saya Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.

Authentication PaperNBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon Certificate for the blade

NBTHK, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on May 11th in the 12th year of Heisei (2000). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.

Registration Number : Oita 31405
