Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Izuminokami(Masakatsu) with NBTHK Hozon Certificate

【Description】
Izuminokami Masakatsu is a swordsmith from the early Edo period(SHINTO-era). He studied sword-forging techniques under the Ishido school in Edo city(today’s Tokyo). During the Edo period, many Samurai moved to Edo city, and it is said that about half of the population in the city was Samurai. Ishido school was able to forge high-quality Katanas, and their swords were quite popular among middle-high class Samurais in Edo city. Ishido school originated in Ohmi province(today’s Shiga prefecture), and there were four major branches, including Osaka, Chikuzen(Fukuoka), Ki(Wakayama), and Edo.

The signature of Izuminokami(和泉守) is inscribed on the tang. Izuminokami is the title for any skilled swordsmiths. The name of Kami was given by an emperor to those who were excellent at sword making. Although there is no maker’s name after the title, NBTHK concluded that the sword was forged by Izuminokami Masakatsu(和泉守正勝). The tang part was cut due to the adjustment of the blade in the past.

This sword has a Hozon certificate issued by NBTHK. This authentication paper was only given to Japanese swords, worth preserving by Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai(the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword). This sword comes with a beautiful set of sword mountings.
