Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Hirokuni with Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate

【Description】

This blade was forged by Bushu Jyu Hirokuni(武州住広国). Bushu is the name of the area in the Tokyo today where he made this blade. According to NBTHK that authenticated this blade, it was forged approximately in the early Edo period(early 17th century). We called NBTH to confirm its approximate age. There was also a record of him forging blades in Satsuma domain(today’s Kagoshima prefecture).

Hirokuni belonged to the Bushu Shitahara school, located in today’s Tokyo(Hachioji city). It is said that Yamamoto Norishige founded the school, and it thrived from the end of the Muromachi period to the late Edo period (Late 16th-Late 19th century: about 300 years).

Shitahara Kaji(Shitahara swordsmiths) is the group of swordsmiths under the Hojo clan’s auspicious, powerful feudal line during the late Muromachi period. After the Toyotomi clan destroyed the Hojo clan in the Azuchi Momoyama period, Shitahara started to serve the Tokugawa clan as Okakae Kaji, swordsmiths exclusively working for a specific feudal family.

According to historical records, Shitahara swordsmiths’s sword forging technique were highly valued and appreciated among Hojyo clan and Tokugawa government. We assume this blade could have been originally made for a high-ranked Samurai officer who served Tokugawa Shogunate considering its gorgeous Sugata(whole appearance) and intricate Hamon(tempering line). Most of the Shitahara swordsmith’s real sir name was Yamamoto. They kept forging for the Tokugawa clan until the end of the Edo period. Among the Bushu Shitahara group.

This blade is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token(特別保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

The combination of dragon and wave patterns is the motif of this Fuchi Kashira. The dragon’s lively and the powerful figure is depicted. It seems as if this dragon was just born and appeared from the sea, breaking through the waves. In Japan, there is a belief that worships dragon as a water god and is called the Ryujin Shinkou (竜神信仰). Since rice cultivation flourished in this country, water is always an essential resource. Therefore, the dragon motif has been familiar to Japanese people since a long time ago.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

Same as the Fuchi Kashira, this Menuki’s motif is also the dragon. It is colored with golden metal, and it remains its bright color. These dragons are looking back and moving forward as if they are swimming; their figure expresses dash feeling.

Initially, the dragon is an imaginary creature found in ancient traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbolic beast of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, belly is Mizuchi (蛟, mythical animal in Japan which looks like a snake and have a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance. This sacred creature design was favored by many Samurais and is still popular today.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

Rounded rectangle-shaped Tsuba made from iron. Waves are designed on both sides of this work. As the dragon is the motif of this sword mounting’s Fuchi Kashira and Menuki, this Tsuba’s design was also chosen based on the Ryujin Shinkou.

Waves’ movements continue endlessly so that the wave pattern represents eternity, immortality, longevity, birth, etcetera. Also, since tides repeatedly change the shape and terrain of rocks, some people hoped for a strong will by using this motif. People used this pattern wishing for an indomitable spirit to rechallenge time and time without giving up. This motif has been appreciated thanks to its dynamic design, especially for men’s Kimono (traditional Japanese costume).

Saya Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.

Authentication PaperNBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon Certificate for the blade

The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.
