Antique Japanese Sword Katana  Signed by Fujiwara Shigetaka with Hozon Certificate

【Description】

Summary

This blade signed by Echizen Jyu Harima Daijyo Shigetaka(越前住播磨大掾重高). He was one of the most renowned swordsmiths in Echizen province during the early Edo period. He was most active in sword-forging during the Kan-Ei era(1624-1645). Echizen Jyu means living in Echizen province (Today’s Fukui prefecture) and Harima Daijyo is the title he received. It was often the case that a swordsmith signed his signature with where he lived and a title he hold.

Shigetaka was born in Shinshu area(today’s Nagano prefecture) and moved to Mino province (Today’s Gifu prefecture) to become an apprentice of Kanenori(兼則), one of the most renowned sword makers in the region. Mino province was also one of the most prominent sword-forging cites in Japanese history. During the late Muromachi period (the end of the 16th century), Shigetaka and the master Kaenenori moved to Echizen province.

The smith name Shigetaka(重高) lasted 11th generations until the end of Edo period(Late 19th century). From the first-third generations, Shigetaka received Harima Daijyo, an honorable title only given to acknowledged swordsmiths. It is said that the second-gen and third-gen were as skilled as the first-gen.

Echizen Province was prosperous during the Edo period, being ruled by the Echizen Matsudaira clan, a direct retainer of Tokugawa clan who ruled the Edo government.
Many skilled swordsmiths moved to Echizen from different regions because of high demand among Samurai who lived there.
Among them, there were many renowned swordsmiths who were originally from the Mino province(Gifu prefecture), such as Shigetaka. They are called Echizen Seki swordsmiths.

This blade is appraised as a Hozon Token(保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved with artistic value.

*Please keep in mind that there are a couple of noticeable Kitae Kizu on the blade. If you like to see the detailed condition, please feel free to contact us.

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

You could see the engraved inscription on the side of the Fuchi part. The first line is engraved as follows: Karaku-Ju (花洛住). Karaku (花洛) means city of flowers; here, it euphemistically refers to Kyoto. Therefore, the first line implies that its maker lived in Kyoto prefecture. And the second line shows the maker’s name Nagamine (永峯), and his stylized signature. According to a theory, Nagamine did well in the middle of the Edo period. He was good at Jinbutsu Zu (人物図, design of people). And as seen in this work, the highlight is that the edge of the Fuchi part is finished thick with golden painting.

About the theme of this Fuchi Kashira, we would categorize it as the Kassen Zu (合戦図). It depicts a scenery of a battlefield. Samurai warriors wear armor and bring weapons. They have stern expressions, and their brave appearance on the battlefield are expressed in detailed sculptures.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

This motif combines a Japanese sword and the head of something that looks like an animal. Due to its appearance, we estimate it is a face of a dragon or a monster. Initially, the dragon was an imaginary creature found in ancient foreign traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbol of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, belly is the Mizuchi (蛟, a mythical animal in Japan that looks like a snake and has a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

Oval-shaped iron Tsuba that has a Kozuka hole. Two people are engraved; one is an older man, and another is a probable child. The gentle atmosphere of the man smiling and engaging in conversation suggests they have a close relationship. Surrounding scenery, such as bamboo groves and mountains, is also carefully expressed.

Saya Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.

Authentication PaperNBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 3017301)

NBTHK, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Mar. 15th in the 30th year of Heisei (2018). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive these original certificates as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.
