Antique Japanese Sword Katana attributed to Sukesada with Hozon Certificate

【Description】

This blade was attributed to  Sukesada (祐定) during Shinto era (Early-Mid Edo Period : Early 17th- Early 18th century).  Sukesada belonged to Osafune school located in Bizen province (Today’s Okayama prefecture).

Those who forged swords in the Bizen province(Okayama prefecture) at the end of the Muromachi Period(1492-1569 A.D) are called Matsu Bizen(Matsu means the end). Sukesada school was one of the most famous schools, and it flourished for generations among Osafune schools (The head branch). There were various styles forged by the generations of Sukesada during this period. Approximately 60 swordsmiths used Sukesada as his maker’s name in the Samurai history. In that sense, the swordsmith’s name “Sukesada” worked as a kind of brand that attracted many Samurai.

The swordsmiths in Bizen produced many swords during the Muromachi period as it was in the middle of the Sengoku period(Warring state period). The demand for weapons increased among strong feudal lords. It would be nice to have a piece forged in the warring state period when there was so much rivalry between warlords. However, The sword-forging tradition of Bizen province almost disappeared because of the disastrous flood of Yoshii river(1590), which was closed to Osafune school. Even after everything was destroyed, there were few remaining swordsmiths. One of them was group of swordsmiths who signed Sukesada. They became one of the pioneers that revitalized the sword-forging business in Bizen province after the disaster.

BIZEN is located near the Chugoku Mountains, where iron sands, one of the essential materials for making Japanese swords, were abundant. Furthermore, BIZEN swordsmiths had close access to Yoshi River, where they could find water and charcoal. This geological location contributed to the swordsmiths to forge high-quality refined blades. We presume BIZEN was quite active in sword-forging from ancient times. It is said that BIZEN DEN was created by groups of swordsmiths there after the late Heian era(Late 12th century ).

This blade is appraised as a Hozon Token(保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved with artistic value.

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

The wave pattern is engraved semi-three dimensionally on this Fuchi Kashira. The rough colliding waves are elaborately carved. As waves’ movements continue endlessly, the wave pattern represents eternity, immortality, longevity, birth, etcetera. Also, since tides repeatedly change the shape and terrain of rocks, some people hoped for a strong will by using this motif. People used this pattern wishing for an indomitable spirit to rechallenge time and time without giving up.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

You would find the figure of the dragon on each side of the handle. We believe this dragon motif was intentionally chosen to combine with Fuchi Kashira’s wave pattern. In Japan, a belief worships the dragon as a water god. Therefore, it is understandable that the combination of dragons and waves was incorporated into a design for sword mountings.

If you focus on the hand of the upper Menuki dragon, you will find that this dragon brings a ball-shaped object in its hand. It is the Nyoi Houju (如意宝珠, Cintāmaṇi), a fantasy jewel that fulfills any desire and gives out treasure, clothes, food, and drinks. Moreover, it heals illness and suffering, removes evils, purifies muddy water, and prevents disasters. It is said this magical item is taken from the brain of the dragon king.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

This circle-shaped Tsuba has the same symmetrical design on both sides. A four-pronged flower or leaf pattern is carved, and two elongated bar-shaped patterns are engraved with openwork between each. This Tsuba might be simple at first glance; however, when it is loaded into the handle, its large design looks more attractive, and we understand that this Tsuba is an element that gives a stunning and powerful impression to this Koshirae.

Saya Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.

Authentication PaperNBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 350138)

The purchaser will receive these original certificates as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.
