Antique Japanese Sword Daisho Signed by Yoshimichi with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate

【Description】

This Katana&Wakizashi blades were signed by Yamato no Kami Yoshimichi(大和守吉道), whose real name was Mishina Uemon (三品宇右衛門). He was active in sword-forging during the early Edo period(1652-1675) in Osaka. He was the second son of the first-gen Osaka Tanba no  Kami Yoshimichi(大阪丹波守吉道). Yamato no Kami Yoshimichi belonged to Osaka Mishina school, so as his father.

Mishina school’s founder Kanemichi(兼道) was originally from Mino province, exclusively forging blades for Shingen Takeda, a famous feudal lord. Later on, he moved to Kyoto by bringing his four sons and founded his school named Mishina(三品) in Kyoto. Mishina school was one of the most prospered ones during the early Edo period.
One of Kanemichi’s sons was Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi, the father of the first-gen Osaka Tanbo no Kami Yoshimichi.
They were also known as very famous swordsmiths.
Osaka Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi initially forged swords under his father’s school in Kyoto but moved to Osaka and founded Osaka Mishina school. Yamato no Kami Yoshimichi was one of the renowned swordsmiths in Osaka during the early Edo period. And we assume these Katana and Wakizashi were made for high-ranked Samurai officers.

There are quite a few types of tempering lines (Hamon) in Japanese swords. And one of the most popular designs is Choji Midare(Irregular wavy tempering line). Yamato no Kami Yoshimichi was very good at forging blades with this particular tempering line and known as a master of Choji Midare in the Osaka area. His workmanship was widely recognized, and he received the honorable title of Yamato no Kami.

The blades forged by Yamato no Kami Yoshimichi are categorized as Osaka Shinto. Shinto is Japanese Sword terminology that refers to the swords forged during 1596-1781. The blades made in the Osaka area during this period are called Osaka Shinto. There are many famous swordsmiths in this Osaka Shinto era. After Hideyoshi Toyotomi built Osaka castle, Osaka city flourished as a castle town and became the business center. Many swordsmiths moved to Osaka to look for better opportunities. They not only forged swords for those Samurai who lived in Osaka but also for feudal lords nationwide.

One of the most notable characteristics of Osaka Shinto is its beauty in Jigane. Jigane is a visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during the forging process), which made it possible by the location of Osaka. Osaka had close access to the Tamahagane(special carbon steel to make Japanese swords) production sites. The swordsmiths residing in Osaka were able to get high-quality carbon steel from these sites.

This blade is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token(特別保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.

While the sword mounting of Katana&Wakizashi isn’t identical, both blades were signed by the same swordsmith.

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Sabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

Katana

Dragons are designed for this Fuchi Kashira. Their bodies are painted with golden metal; it seems they are swimming in the sea. Initially, the dragon is an imaginary creature found in ancient traditions or myths.
Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbolic beast of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, belly is the Mizuchi ( 蛟 , mythicalanimal in Japan which looks like a snake and have a horn and four legs),scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd looking appearance. Also, in Japan, there is a belief that worships dragon is a water god. This is probably why these dragons are combined with water.

Wakizashi

The landscape at the waterside is beautifully depicted for this Fuchi Kashira. There is a bridge in the foreground, and a Chinese style building is seen behind it. The big tree in the distant vi ew is probably a pine tree. You would find a small house like building and a boat in the Fuchi part. Same as the Kashira part, pine trees are engraved. The golden painting and copper’s reddish brown color decorate this work gorgeously.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

Katana

Same as the Fuchi Kashira, this Menuki’s motif is also the dragon. Although some golden paintings have already been peeled off due to aging, t his Menuki remains its shiny look. If you focus on the dragon’s hand, you will notice that it brings a small ball. According to a theory, this ball is the Nyoi Houju ( 如意宝珠 ,CintāmaCintāmaṇ i). It is a fantasy jewel that fulfills any desire, gives out treasure, clo thes, food, and drink. Moreover,it heals illness and suffering, removes evils, purifies muddy water, and prevents disasters. It is said this magical item is taken from the brain of the king of the dragon.

Wakizashi

A kind of fruit is the motif of this Menuki. By seeing from its shape, it might be peach. In ancient times,
people considered peach as a sacred tree and would exterminate evil spirits. It is said that there was a custom of eliminating evil spirits with bows and peach branches made from peach trees. According to a Chinese legend, a fairy ate peaches and extended her 3,000 year old age. Based on this folklore, this fruit represents longevity. Also, there is a famous Japanese fairy tale called Momotarou ( 桃太郎 , Momo means peach in Japanese); this is the main character’s name; this is the story about the conquest of ogres by him. The peach pattern symbolizes good luck and victory due to this folklore. Also, in the Kojiki 古事記 , regarded as the oldest history book in existenc e in Japan), it is written that peaches were growing on the border that separates this world from the next world. It gave meaning: resuscitation for this motif.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

Katana

This is an antique Tsuba made from iron. It has the Yotsu Mokkou shape. Mokkou shape, i ts origin is a shape of eggs. Yotsu Mokkougata (a combination of four Mokkou shapes) Tsuba is often seen as this work is categorized The leaf pattern is engraved from the center hole to all sides; we hope you would appreciate
its well balanced symmetrical design.

Wakizashi

This is an antique iron Tsuba that has Kozuka and Kougai holes. Flowers and leaves are engraved with the Sukashi Bori (openwork) technique. It features four small petaled flowers and jagged leaves. It seems this Tsuba’s surface was initially colored with golden metal.
We guess this Tsuba once had a more shiny appearance.

Saya Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.
